Recommendation #1

Smoke Detectors

Ensure your home is equipped with at least one smoke detector. A smoke detector can save you and your family's lives by alerting you to a possible fire. This alert can give you the precious time you need to exit your home.

To ensure their proper function, change the battery in your smoke detectors twice per year. You can use the bi-annual time changes (Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time in the fall, and from Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time in the spring) as reminders. When your smoke detector runs low on battery, it will chirp periodically until it's been changed. Do not ignore this signal, change the battery as soon as possible.

Recommendation #2

risk awareness

Whether indoors or outside, always be mindful of the potential risk of a fire starting unexpectedly. Be aware of burn bans in your area, discard your smoking materials responsibly, and put out your campfires completely. Be sure to carry a fire extinguisher with you on camping trips and when you're outside enjoying a fire pit on a cool evening in your yard. Help keep Arkansas green and beautiful!

Fire Hydrant access

Our four-legged friends historically love to take advantage of fire hydrants.  However, due to the emergency access required to fire hydrants that may occur any time of the day or night, it is critical that they remain unblocked by vehicles.  Don't risk getting a ticket, or having your vehicle towed away.  Never park near or block access to a fire hydrant!

Recommendation #4

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

We highly recommend keeping a fire extinguisher ready in your home. In case of a house fire, a fire extinguisher, when used correctly, can be life-saving. When purchasing, storing, and using a fire extinguisher, please consider the following recommendations from the U.S. Fire Administration:

  • Type- There are five main types of fire extinguishers (A, B, C, D, and K) used for different types of fires. Some fire extinguishers are multi-purpose. Ensure that you buy a fire extinguisher fit for your needs.
  • Size- Purchase the largest extinguisher you can handle safely handle. Fire extinguishers should not be used by young children and older adults.
  • Storage- Store your fire extinguisher in a place you can access it easily.
  • Condition- Routinely check your fire extinguisher for proper function, ensuring the hoses and nozzles are clean and fully intact, without dents or rust.
  • Pressure- Refer to the guidelines for your fire extinguisher to determine how often the pressure needs to be tested.

You should ensure your family has an emergency escape plan in case of a fire. Review and practice the plan, so you are ready if it's ever needed. In case of a fire, first, get your household to safety and call 911 before attempting to use the fire extinguisher.
